Looking Deeply at My Hands
By Anonymous
Looking deeply at my hands:
I see
The hard work that needed to happen For my hands to grow
And be able to support me
I see
My ancestors going through the struggles of coming to the United States
Starting from scratch
In a country where life was so different from what they knew
Building a life for themselves and then for me
I see
Years of anticipation
Before each new pair of hands was formed
Including my own
I see
Those same hands that struggled through challenges
Reaching out for comfort
Holding me after my birth
Holding my hand to comfort me as I grew up
I see
The repeated pattern of these hands throughout the generations
Struggling to learn every new skill
Succeeding at some and failing at others
But never failing to provide comfort when it really matters
I see
These hands that have changed
From tiny prints on the wall to what I am looking at now
Many hands have come together throughout my life to help me become the person I am today
And lead to the hands I am seeing in this moment
